what's up fatlip
I went with homegirl to see The Pharcyde perform the other night for the Bizarre Ride II 20th anniversary and let me tell you. It was so much better than I'd been expecting! Dudes played with a live jazz band, did a trippy horrorcore tribute on 4 Better or 4 Worse with crazy masks and visuals, some dude dressed up as ya mama, and a b-boy dance-off for Return of the B-boy with Adidas outfits and all.
At the time I didn't know the story behind their split in the 90s; Fatlip got kicked out of the group for being a crackhead/all-round loose unit, and their producer J-Swift also became a crack addict and homeless (there's an award-winning documentary about J-Swift called 1 More Hit that looks interesting but also really tragic). I can remember the look on Fatlip's face when he came out on stage, looking out at the sell-out crowd (with somewhat spaced-out eyes) and exclaimed, "Damn. There's a lot of motherfuckers out here tonight". He looked genuinely blown away.
Watching this documentary What's Up, Fatlip? by Spike Jonze (1999), which sort of chronicles his downfall and drug addiction in a nutshell, I can see why he would've been so blown away, and watching this makes me so glad I was there. In the doco he speaks very openly about growing old, broken dreams, and mistakes he made as a rapper trying to emulate "the New York style", instead of realizing what they were doing was worthy of recognition as an original style of hip-hop. The doco is up on Youtube in 3 parts, and at the end is one of the coolest rap videos I think I've seen.Watch part 1 for some of the funniest shit ever.

a friend intro'd me to this girl's pictures and damnnnn she's got that spirit of Merata Mita in Patu! native girls getting all political with their cameras, showing us the world through their eyes. what is the narrative of these women; what do they bring to our periphery and how do they render it? this is an ongoing fascination of mine (one day i will get around to writing more about it).
"Standing Rock is a poetic exploration of the Standing Rock Indian Reservation. The Standing Rock Indian Reservation is a Lakota, Yanktonai and Dakota Indian reservation in North Dakota and South Dakota in the United States. Standing Rock conveys the spiritual and cultural importance of the land to the Lakota people. It also presents a contemporary Native American attitude towards the reservation and it's relation to the United States."

solar eclipse
will occur on the 20th of May.

"A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between Earth and the Sun, thereby totally or partially obscuring the image of the Sun for a viewer on Earth. An annular solar eclipse occurs when the Moon's apparent diameter is smaller than the Sun, causing the Sun to look like an annulus (ring), blocking most of the Sun's light."
